Walter, I know some people have stopped taking Metformin for their high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome and switched to natural supplements such as 1) Ashwagandha 2) Alpha Lipoic Acid and 3) Berberine.

My question is: Would any (or all) of these natural supplements have the same effect as Metformin with regard to degrading the spike protein? Why? Or why not?

Thank you in advance for looking into this query.

I would imagine Berberine would work just as well, if not better

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2410097/

"In newly-diagnosed diabetic patients, berberine reduced blood glucose and lipids (Table 2). There were significant decreases in HbA1c (by 2%; P < 0.01), FBG (by 3.8 mmol/L; P < 0.01) and PBG (by 8.8 mmol/L; P < 0.01) in the berberine group. The FBG (or PBG) declined progressively during the berberine treatment, reaching a nadir that was 3.7 mmol/L (or 8.7 mmol/L) below baseline by week 5, and remained at this level until the end of the study (Fig 1A). Triglycerides and total cholesterol decreased by 0.24 mmol/L (P < 0.05) and 0.57 mmol/L (P < 0.05) with berberine treatment. It seemed there was a declining trend of HDL-C and LDL-C; however, no significant differences between week 1 and week 13 were observed in the berberine group. Compared with metformin, berberine exhibited an identical effect in the regulation of glucose metabolism, such as HbA1c, FBG, PBG, fasting insulin and postprandial insulin. In the regulation of lipid metabolism, berberine activity is better than metformin. By week 13, triglycerides and total cholesterol in the berberine group had decreased and were significantly lower than in the metformin group"

Great question

Sadly most of my patients who got severe ICU level covid were on metformin...

A skewed sample to be sure as most have DM2

Expand full comment

I noticed that too, in my circle of aging relations, friends and neighbours with DM2. Metformin is the first Rx they get. Most got more drugs on top. They had severe bouts of Covid regardless of their multi-jab status. I think DM2 may wipe out benefits of metformin use for Covid. Studies have also shown that those who need ICU for Covid are terribly low in D compared to those who don't need medical treatment for Covid. So maybe metformin works best on Covid when blood D is optimal and there is no metabolic disease.

Just wondering if they were vaxxed.

I love these Friday hope substacks! Thank you Walter.

Metformin is the only "drug" that Life Extension Co. has endorsed:

Also, this doctor just spoke how simple "Pepto Bismo" ($2.50 at Walmart for generic brand) got many people with severe "covid" off the Ventilator. It is worth having at home for colds/flu/"Covid."

Is there anything a spoonful of Pepto can't help?

Fascinating info. Thanks for digging this up and posting! The main downside with clinical metformin use, in my experience, is that it blocks B12 absorption (one of the reasons I seem to see lots of neuropathy in TypeII DM?). Chronic users of metformin really should be on monthly B12 injections, I think.

You Go Walter. You Go! Reading through your posts is a study of an active, motivated mind applying informed hunches to new studies. This is a fascinating, honest approach; and, I think it will bear fruit, if it hasn't already. Again, I don't think I or any of your 'stackers can thank you enough.

Thank u Walter for this discussion. I use Metformin and Berberine for my metabolic syndrome patients and PCOS patients. I have found that some patients on metformin can develop fatty liver , others don’t . Seems like the patients with hyperlipidemia are more susceptible . Thanks for your insights, much appreciated 🤗

So interesting. Dovetails with your last post. Well done.

I think dmso is a game changer. At least for me, it’s done wonders. Not sure how it does it though. I wish I could do the IV therapy, but nobody offers it where I live. It doesn’t get the interest it deserves because it can’t be patented.

What is dmso?

How are you taking it if not IV?

I have the gel. And rub it in to the skin. It gets into the blood stream almost immediately.

A few years ago metformin suddenly got bad press, I think it was around the beginning of covid, actually, but it didn't stick. Knowing how things have gone the last few years, that probably means it works to treat covid.

I can just imagine how well it will over when I ask hubbies pulmonologist to prescribe Metformin for spike protein damages.

Look up PCOS and complain of those symptoms instead. You might have to try your Primary or Gyn.

Need it for my hubby, not me:)

If his Doc won’t agree, you might want to try India. Indiamart.com is useful.

Are the nanotubes that form conduits between cells the same as filopodia or are they different structures with different functions? Cdc42 regulates fillpodia formation. Is that the same for nanotubes?
