Friday Hope: Dietary Fiber: Reducing Basal Endotoxin Levels by 75%
A tale of two breakfasts.
Intestinal uptake of endotoxins occurs with uptake of dietary fat after this has been hydrolyzed by pancreatic lipase and its protein cofactor lipase to fatty acids. In the intestinal cell, chylomicrons are formed and leave through passage into the lymph. Endotoxins have the potential to induce inflammation. Fatty acids are primarily used as an energy source but may also induce inflammation.
As it has been determined that the Spike Protein is an effective lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (endotoxin) delivery system, it would be in our best interest to minimize the amount of endotoxin circulating in our bodies. Fortunately, nature has a very simple, and, frankly, delicious way to assist in this quest.
In performing my research, I discovered a fabulous article which demonstrates just how powerful eating a diet rich in fiber can significantly reduce the amount of circulating endotoxins. It is a paper comparing the effects of two different breakfasts on endotoxemia.
One interesting note on the following standard breakfasts. Smoking had no apparent effect on LPS.
THE STANDARD BREAKFAST
STANDARD BREAKFAST 1
23 g margarine
9 g butter
1 g olive oil
75 g of bread
20 g of jam
200 g of banana
A vast majority of us Americans would probably consider this to be a healthy breakfast (OK, sans margarine). However, the effects of this breakfast on the body are shocking. After this breakfast, the following was measured:
- Elevated IL-6
- Elevated LPS
STANDARD BREAKFAST 2
a cup of tea
three slices of toast
50 g butter
Again, after this breakfast, detrimental effects were noted:
Measurement of LPS in the circulating blood demonstrated a significant rise from low basic levels of around 8 ng/L to approximately 12 ng/L postprandially within four hours after starting the meal.
STANDARD (?) BREAKFAST 3
The study claims this “breakfast” as “standard.” Effects are what we are observing.
CHOICE OF A 300 CALORIE SERVING:
Cream
Glucose juice
Orange juice
Water
And, with the following results:
Thereafter, the levels of endotoxins were determined. It was found that with cream, the LPS level was increased 40% during five hours postprandially, while the glucose juice, the orange juice, or water had no influence.
Now, let us compare the above results with a fiber-enriched breakfast recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA).
FIBER-ENRICHED AHA BREAKFAST
Oatmeal
Milk
Raisins
Muffins with peanut butter
Orange juice
The results compared to a standard breakfast are staggering. We ask ourselves, muffins? Peanut butter? Yet, the measurements speak for themselves.
Blood glucose values were higher after consumption of the standard meal compared to the AHA-meal, despite the lower level of carbohydrate consumed. This is explained by the absence of fiber in the standard meal, in contrast to the AHA-meal, which contained fiber from both raisin and from oat. Insulin and cholesterol levels were the same during the two different meals. Comparatively, the triglyceride serum levels were significantly higher in the standard meal compared to the AHA-meal, measured three hours after the start of the meal. The basal endotoxin levels in these men were around 0.35 EU/mL and increased by 40% after the standard meal, and with 10% after the AHA-meal.
A 75% reduction in basal endotoxin levels by comparison! This is a testament as to just how important dietary fiber is. Incorporating a balanced, healthy amount of dietary fiber into our diets is not only good for gut and cardiovascular health, but may be critical in preventing severe acute COVID, and/or the development of Long COVID.

My husband and I switched to a high fiber diet several years ago and have had many benefits. We use traditional preparation methods like soaking legumes and using fermentation for our bread in order to maximize nutrient uptake (reducing phytic acid and other anti-nutrients). It took a while for our bodies to adjust to the higher fiber but now we feel fantastic eating loads of veggies, legumes, fruits and whole grains. It’s a very pro-microbiome diet. We do include healthy animal products/fish, as well and lots of fermented foods. I personally think focusing on creating a healthy, diverse microbiome is the best way to reach a state of good health. So I appreciate such a great and simple study like this! Thank you
